The Quest for 53 Pt. 2

- The 4 O' clock deadline has come and gone and when the dust settled, 4 players no longer are Redskins and one player has (injured) reserved a seat on the bench for the 2010 season. The four players cut: G/C Edwin Williams, DE/LB Hall Davis, S Lendy Holmes and LS James Dearth. Meanwhile, the ailing Malcolm Kelly was put on IR for a hamstring that just wouldn't get any better.

So far in the "quest" my last guess/prediction wasn't too bad with only Williams winding up on my 53. After cuts and the Jets game, here's my new prediction (note: last group will be listed above).

QB (3)
Last: Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman
Now: Donovan McNabb, Rex Grossman, John Beck

Comments: Beck stood out during the Jets game and may have done enough to earn a roster spot. A good performance during the Cardinals game may be enough to solidify the spot.
Update: Beck signs a two year extension, which pretty much means he's made the roster and could play a significant role for the team in the future.

RB (4)
Last: Clinton Portis, Mike Sellers, Larry Johnson, Ryan Torain, Keiland Williams
Now: Clinton Portis, Mike Sellers, Larry Johnson, Keiland Williams

Comments: Haven't seen that much of  Ryan Torain since the Bills game. We'll know more after Thursday.

TE (3)
Last: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Lee Vickers
Now: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis, Lee Vickers

Comments: Logan Paulsen will make a push for the #3 spot vs. Vickers.

WR (6)
Last: Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Anthony Armstrong, Joey Galloway, Brandon Banks, Empty Spot
Now:  Santana Moss, Devin Thomas, Anthony Armstrong, Joey Galloway, Brandon Banks, Terrence Austin
Comments: I'm not convinced that the Skins will keep both rookies Banks and Austin. I still think one of these guys will be on the practice squad, but if they both have great games in Arizona.....who knows. I still think that the Skins will have a WR not currently on the team on their final roster when all is said and done.

O-Line (9)
Last: Trent Williams, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Artis Hicks, Jammal Brown, Stephon Heyer, Kory Lichtensteiger, Edwin Williams, Empty Spot
Now: Trent Williams, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Artis Hicks, Jammal Brown, Stephon Heyer, Kory Lichtensteiger, Selvish Capers, Will Montgomery

Comments: When you look at depth, you look at guys who could start at multiple positions if needed. Heyer can play both tackle positions. Lichtensteiger can play G/C. Montgomery can play G/C and will try to play RT on Thursday. If Selvish Capers can show that he can play some guard, he'll probably make the roster (probably inactive most weeks but a very nice potential project).

Special Teams (3)
Last: Graham Gano (K), Josh Bidwell (P), Nick Sundberg (LS)
Now: Graham Gano (K), Josh Bidwell (P), Nick Sundberg (LS)

Comments: The cutting of James Dearth solidified the specialist positions.

D-line (7)
Last: Ma'ake Kemoeatu, Albert Haynesworth, Adam Carriker, Kedric Golston, Phillip Daniels, Anthony Bryant, Vonnie Holliday.
Now: Ma'ake Kemoeatu, Albert Haynesworth, Adam Carriker, Kedric Golston, Phillip Daniels, Jeremy Jarmon,Vonnie Holliday.

Comment: I still think Scott, Bryant and Green are in the mix.

Linebackers (8)
Last: Brian Orakpo, Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher, Andre Carter, Lorenzo Alexander, H.B. Blades, Perry Riley, Chris Wilson, Robert Henson
Now: Brian Orakpo, Rocky McIntosh, London Fletcher, Andre Carter, Lorenzo Alexander, H.B. Blades, Perry Riley, Chris Wilson

Comment: Henson joins the practice squad for a few weeks until Kareem Moore is ready to go. Either that or a WR or CB spot gets cut until the Skins are healthy at S.

Secondary (10)
Last: DeAngelo Hall, Carlos Rogers, LaRon Landry, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty, Chris Horton, Phillip Buchanon, Kevin Barnes, Justin Tryon.
Now: DeAngelo Hall, Carlos Rogers, LaRon Landry, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty, Chris Horton, Phillip Buchanon, Kevin Barnes, Ramzee Robinson, Tyrone Carter.

Comment: Could the writing be on the wall about Byron Westbrook after ESPN put out a report that he'd been cut? Robinson has looked good in practice and special teams play. He could be here. Carter knows the system and could help fill in until Moore is ready.

Final cuts are Saturday I believe at 6PM.
We'll have one more prediction after the Cardinals game.
